The living discovery record for Absolute Essential
Built from 9 working sessions (21 Jul – 17 Aug 2026), the entity pack v12, brand guidelines, and Bo's correspondence · Updated 21 Aug 2026
How this works. Captured means it's on the record and feeding the strategy. Partial means a detail or two is still being confirmed (nothing blocking). Async means it's with someone as homework, named in the table at the bottom. One link, always current.
The discovery record
1 · The business, in Bo's words Captured
Feeds → brand profile · positioning · every article
What the company is (the locked description)
"Absolute Essential is a New Zealand company founded in 1988 that makes certified organic and wild harvested therapeutic essential oils and botanical wellness products, ethically sourced from small-hold growers and produced at its own solar powered facility at Muriwai Beach, Aotearoa New Zealand." Locked wording, used everywhere, never paraphrased. Countries claim is now "originating in over 30 countries" (Bo's 19 Aug ruling).
The positioning, in her words
"A therapeutic, medicinal quality, ethical brand, sustainable... we work very hard to keep that space as our authority." Closest analogue: Weleda, with essential oils as the active ingredients. A wellness brand, not just an oils company. Depth of knowledge is the moat: the Encyclopedia, Ask Dr Bo (~250 answered questions), 15 recorded webinars, and Bo's clinical formulation heritage.
The naming rules
One spelling forever: Absolute Essential. Never "Absolute Essentials", "AE Oils" or "Absolute Essential Oils". Always "founded 1988", never a company age (the site currently says 35 in one place and 38 in another, which is exactly why).
2 · People & bylines Captured
Feeds → author persona · E-E-A-T
The named author
Dr Bo Hendgen DO ND AM: registered osteopath (Osteopathic Council of NZ, 22-00190), naturopath and aromatic medicine practitioner. Over 35 years in clinical practice (maternity focus) and over 40 years with aromatic extracts, the two streams always kept distinct. "Registered" attaches to osteopath only. Three locked bios exist and are used verbatim at the right length.
The founder-forward decision
Bo deliberately kept herself unseen for years so the company could stand on its own. That's reversed for AI search: "it's good authority for us. We should play with that." The 221 unbylined articles get her authorship as part of the entity work.
The knowledge goldmine
Bo is rich in first-hand clinical anecdotes that are hard to write but easy to speak. Agreed pipeline: voice notes and conversation mining for information-gain content ("I've got oodles of this").
3 · Money map & product priorities Partial
Feeds → product lines · topic priority
Bestsellers and margin steer
US: 41% of last year's sales were two products, Apricot Kernel and Scar Solution. The margin rule: owned-IP formulations (Scar Solution, Hair Restorer, blends, skincare) beat commodity single oils: "our margins are much better." Never compete on price.
What not to promote
No castor oil content angle (demand was a social-media craze, now collapsed, plus brand-safety concerns). Diffuser content must sell oils and blends, not hardware. The Encyclopedia is never rewritten by refresh cycles. Okendo review flows are never touched.
Catalogue shape
~221 active products across essential oils, blends, Mother & Child (trademarked), skincare, condition/healthcare products, Mind & Mood, carrier oils (virgin first-pressed, some edible, "quite unique to us"), waterless diffusers. Signature uniques: Nepali 3x, Wild Mint from high-altitude Nepal.
Still confirming
Partial NZ and AU bestseller splits (US is on record); webinars' future as a product line ("might all disappear or be highlighted").
4 · Opportunity & the 12-month picture Captured
Feeds → strategy · measures of success
The goal, in her words
"Just become the market leader and authority with AI... in each market." Three markets at three maturity levels: NZ mature (35-year stockists), AU emerging (distributors + 3PL), US DTC-only against dominant MLMs. No cookie-cutter approach.
The success bar
Investment back plus 30% inside 12 months; plus 50% is a good result. Content deployed and measurable by 30 September to catch Black Friday through Christmas.
The US thesis
Biggest growth potential. High engagement (~30% CTR, strong newsletter signups) but ~0.5% conversion: "a problem which I didn't know I had. I need to find that leak." Freight and shipping changes already made to test it. Provenance wedge: manuka and NZ-native.
5 · Ideal customers Partial
Feeds → audiences
Who buys, validated
Condition and solution buyers, not oil-name buyers: "sleep — dads, moms, kids. It's a huge conversation. Safety for pets is constantly asked for." Pregnancy safety is Bo's "pet conversation", backed by the trademarked Mother & Child logo. Practitioner and consumer mix. Notable's generated persona validated by Bo: "this is pretty accurate, just looking at it."
Still to come
Async Bo's own advertising personas (offered 17 Aug, requested in the cluster reply). The webinar lesson stands: education alone doesn't convert, content must tie to AE's differentiation.
6 · Competitors Partial
Feeds → market context (never named in copy)
The teardown, by market
NZ: Dolphin Clinic ("probably our biggest competitor" on shelves), Zurma, doTERRA (MLM), Pure Nature and Lotus (DIY), GoNature (bulk). AU: Springfields (ubiquitous in chemists), Oil Garden, Tinderbox ("terrible brand" but everywhere in WA). Stockists cut both ways: HealthPost and Pharmacy Direct outbid AE for its own terms.
The structural rule
"It needs to break down into the markets. There are brands in the US which are our strongest competitor, they don't even get mentioned or sold here." The brand profile now carries market-tagged competitor sets, and a per-market field is on the platform roadmap.
Owed
Async Bo's written competitor briefs for NZ, AU and US (she has all three ready).
7 · Voice, tone & the never-say list Captured
Feeds → voice profile · writing rules
The voice
Four traits, all at once: Boss, Sharing, Familiar, Smart (ABE001 Brand Guidelines). Professional and intelligent; no American slang ("come on, speak professionally and intelligently"); no exclamation marks; punchy sentences; no gender-specific language; the "uncompromising goodness" idea expressed through varied language, never the phrase itself. Answer the question in the first two sentences.
The claims rule
Compliance is the hard gate: NZ MedSafe and TAPS, AU TGA, US FDA. Therapeutic uses framed as traditional use, the Encyclopedia's compliant pattern. Pain and cancer are the most demanded and most restricted topics. Clinical accuracy is absolute: never a wrong dose, carrier oils are never diffused, "measurable results, not fictive results". Quality over quantity: "we are really not interested in 30 articles."
The never-say list
21 locked items held on file: no company age, no bare green adjectives, no USDA/EU organic, no "certified vegan" until the certificate lands, no competitor names in copy, no perfume-company link, ownership stays "family owned", exact certifier spellings, "the United States" never "the USA", and more. Encoded into the brand profile's writing rules so every generated piece inherits them.
8 · Trust, proof & provenance Captured
Feeds → authority layer · entity records
Certifications, from the certificates on file
BioGro 5406 (since 2012, 97 products on Annex A) and AsureQuality 0820 (since 2009, 183 products scheduled), both JAS-ANZ accredited. FernMark NZFM100109. Food Act NP3. Vegan certificate requested, unpublishable until in hand. The two product counts are never added together.
Awards, independently verified
Seven NHPNZ awards on the record and now on the public entity records with references: Supreme 2015 and 2023, Sustainability 2014, 2015 and 2017, Innovation 2020, and the inaugural Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2023. Dr Bo: Edmund Hillary Fellow 2020. The 2016 sustainability claim rests on Bo's word alone Async.
Provenance mechanisms
Distillation at or near source through small-hold grower cooperatives; on-site solar and 100% rainwater; 100+ native trees planted yearly since 2002; Rockstock mineral paper labels and compostable shippers; CarbonClick at checkout. Always the named mechanism, never the bare adjective.
9 · Content preferences & operations Partial
Feeds → content types · ways of working
Formats that fit
Condition-based buying guides, traditional-use and research explainers, ingredient deep dives, comparisons, expert Q&A (the Ask Dr Bo corpus, ~50% overlap with our prompt research), DIY blends with verified dilution. The "Need to Know" fortnightly educational series is live through Christmas. Listicles removed from the profile.
The calibration agreement
Bo was burned by an agency whose quality decayed after two articles. The agreed model: calibrate first on small batches, then earn autonomy. Her review capacity is limited, so the profile has to be right rather than her edits being the safety net.
Still to settle
Partial Formal sign-off process and turnaround once content volume starts (October conversation).
10 · Measurement & ways of working Partial
Feeds → reporting · delivery setup
On the record
Shopify orders are the system of record; baseline locked and split branded vs non-branded before any work (see the Baseline tab). Bo watches her own GSC and GA4 closely and does her own analysis. Access: GSC, GA4, and the Team Empathy Access custom Shopify app all live.
Still to settle
Partial The standing reporting rhythm beyond this live report (monthly re-baseline is agreed; the review cadence conversation belongs with the October content phase).
